Idol alum Carrie Underwood and Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford have split after 8 months of carefully protected romance, UsMagazine is reporting.

No word yet on why the romance has fallen by the wayside, but with those new gay rumors about Chace and J.C. Chasez, who knows. To that effect, PerezHilton reported earlier this week:

The Globe (yeah, we know) is reporting a new celebrity love triangle. The players? Chace Crawford, Carrie Underwood and... JC Chasez.

The report claims that Chace and J.C. have been popping up at lots of places together since meeting last September in New York. They spent New Year's Eve partying side by side in Miami and both attended Elton John's Oscar party in Los Angeles. They also arrived at LAX together at the end of February.

Just recently, they were spotted 'pAArtying hard' at the Palms in Vegas.

It's also purported that they're living together!

Yeah, the story's pretty out there. Especially for a sweet southern gal like Carrie Underwood.

But then again, The Globe's timing is pretty uncanny - announcing the love triangle just days before Carrie and Chace split. And people have been speculating about both J.C.'s and Chace's sexual orientation for a while now...

Was Carrie just Chace's beard? And she's finally gotten sick of protecting his gay lifestyle? A little TomKat action?? Doesn't get much juicier than this ...
