Keira Knightley can breathe a sigh of relief: Chanel has refuted reports that Emma Watson signed a multimillion-dollar fragrance deal with the design house. The rumors started last Thursday, when British tabloid The London Evening Standard claimed that the 18-year-old Harry Potter star would be the new face of Chanel. Soon after, the blogosphere was set alight, with post after post claiming that Watson (who has worn Chanel almost exclusively on the red carpet) would be receiving $6 million dollars for two years, versus Knightley's paltry $1 million contract. But not so, says the Parisian fashion house. According to the L.A. Times, the rumors are false — they've only been spreading because Chanel is, as per company policy, not allowed to issue a statement if a report is untrue. "We cannot widely release a statement that the report isn't true," says a spokesperson. While this roundabout thinking has certainly helped to fan the rumor mill flames, it keeps Knightley's job safe — for the time being.
